Updates for CMA
A lot has been happening at CMA in the past week or so:

John Will Seminar
On Saturday 28 July, John Will visited our gym to conduct a seminar in BJJ. For those of you who don’t know who John Will is, he is a world-renowned BJJ coach. He has been visiting our gym over a number of years and comes at least 3 times a year. During this latest seminar he taught what he calls a “vaccination class”, designed to provide participants with some important escapes and counters to the most common problems we encounter when grappling. This was a great seminar for all levels and will really help take our overall grappling game to a new level. John will be out again on Saturday November 13th. If you have an interest in BJJ, I suggest you keep this day free. It is also on at the same time as the Annual CMA camp. Some of us that are going to the camp will be travelling back to the gym for the afternoon to participate in the seminar. Please keep an eye out on the notice board for more details.

Grading Results
On Monday 30th August grading results were handed out. Big congratulations to Ethan, Harry and Zac for receiving their Junior Black Belt. Well done to Ethan, Tyris and Ainsley for receiving the spirit award due to their outstanding effort on the night.
Grading dates are on the notice board, if you believe you are ready to grade and will get the required classes by the grading date, then please put your name up on the grading sheets. The instructors can then help you get your modules marked off, which is also a requirement to grade. The next grading dates for Eagles and Adults Hapkido are 27 October and 23rd October for Little Eagles.
Don’t forget we have a BJJ grading on 27th September.
Finally on a final note regarding gradings please come and support your training partners who are grading. We had a great turn out for the Eagles grading however we could have had more support for the adults grading.

Cage Fitness
The bags have arrived and classes will be starting very soon. Please keep an eye out on the notice board. Having personally done this class I believe that for those who try the class it may become your favourite class. It is a great overall body and cardio workout in just 30mins. What more could you want? I know, a massage from Natalie afterwards. This may be possible in the future.

Finally some of you may have heard of the sad news concerning the sudden passing of Michael and Janelle’s mum Pat. A lot of the students at CMA have meet Pat as she was often at the gym cleaning or offering her support to her family and grandkids during gradings, tournaments etc. Please take the time to offer your support to Michael and Janelle as well as their families during this difficult time.

Grading at CMA
As an instructor at CMA I am often asked the question “when can I grade. As a general guide you need the required number of classes and all modules marked off. I see the modules as being the most important aspect of grading. Even if you have the required number of classes you still need to know your belt level techniques at an acceptable level. I mean we all want to be as best as we can be and have a high standard of martial arts at CMA. If that means you may need to wait an extra 8 weeks to grade then don’t be disheartened, take it as an opportunity to further practise and gain a greater knowledge and understanding of your techniques. At least when you are ready to grade you know that you are as prepared and confident as you can be to grade.

Martials Arts is for life therefore there is no rush to grade. By the time you get to black belt, and you are all capable of this, you will hopefully appreciate the hard work and the patience it took to become a black belt of high standards. Getting the belt is cool, however the journey is the best part.

I would like to make special mention of Austin and Aaron, both going for their brown belts tonight. They really wanted to grade in June however they weren’t quiet ready. So what did they do, they knuckled down and trained hard to ensure they are as prepared as possible for tonight. I had a look at their techniques on Monday and was very happy and pleased with their progress. I am sure they will do very well tonight.

A belt level that should not be rushed is yellow belt. At yellow belt a student is introduced to the locks of Hapkido. This is the foundation belt for locking and it is important that a student is confident in their self-defence techniques at yellow, to ensure a smooth transition to the higher belts. Don’t rush yellow belt.

Good luck to all those that are grading. I know that all those that are grading have trained hard for tonight and deserve to grade.

Finally lets not forget the young achievers of our gym – Ethan, Zac and Harry going for a junior black belt. They have trained very hard for a number of years and reached a milestone that very few get to. Great achievement considering how young they are.
